A US GOV PATENT FOR CBD AS AN ANTIOXIDANT AND NEUROPROTECTANT?

W01999053917A1 is an intl. patent application (Us patent US9763991B2) filed by the Government of the United States of America, Represented by the Secretary, Department of Health and Human Services on 21 April 1999 for "CANNABINOIDS as antioxidants and neuroprotectants". In summary, the US Dept. of Health and Human Services has known about the benefits of cannabinoids and has been researching uses as therapeutic medicine for serious conditions, while simultaneously classifying hemp/marijuana as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, banning access to we the people, since at least 1999. That is, until the Farm Bill passed 20 Dec 2018 and removed hemp from the CSA.

"Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties. This new found property makes the cannabinoids useful in the treatment of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, e.g. limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia. Non-psychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method".
